Editorial disclosure: This guide is informational and intended to help readers organize questions before a high-value purchase or booking. It is not a quote, booking offer, appraisal, legal advice, or financial recommendation.
This expanded BMC Select guide provides a practical research framework for empty-leg private jets: buyer guide. Verify current prices, availability, policies, specifications, and contractual terms before committing funds.
1. What an empty leg is
An empty leg is a repositioning flight that would otherwise operate without paying passengers.
An empty leg is a positioning flight associated with another charter movement. An operator may offer the unused segment at a reduced price rather than fly without passengers.
2. Why pricing can be lower
The aircraft is already scheduled to move, so a provider may accept lower incremental revenue.
The flight exists because of another itinerary, so departure city, destination, date, and timing may be relatively inflexible. If the underlying charter changes, the empty leg can also change or disappear.
3. The flexibility tradeoff
Departure times, airports, aircraft, or availability can change if the underlying charter changes.
Empty legs can suit flexible travelers who can adapt departure time or destination and who have a backup plan. They are less appropriate for critical meetings, weddings, cruises, international connections, or other events where failure to travel would be costly.
4. Who benefits most
Flexible travelers with simple one-way needs can benefit more than travelers with rigid schedules.
Ask for the operating carrier, aircraft, total price, taxes and fees, cancellation rights, baggage limits, and what happens if the positioning requirement changes.
5. What to confirm
Ask about cancellation, refunds, departure windows, baggage, and what happens if the underlying trip changes.
Treat the savings as compensation for reduced certainty. Understand the cost and availability of a conventional charter or commercial alternative before relying on an empty leg.
